bobbin just means spool but on a [domestic] sewing machine the bobbin thread is the bottom [hence winding the bobbin] and the top thread is the spool. i think it`s always been so, i have a few antique and vintage machines and the instructions and the terms are universal if you`re from a mill area then it probably is more a regional thing.

I have the Singer 630 Golden Touch and Sew. I have not used it in many years and I seem to have forgotten how to get the bobbin thread engaged with the upper thread needle. Thank you Granny but this machine threads the bobbin using the needle. you leave the bobbin where the bobbin goes and thread it from there. :D Well, isn't new technology a wonderful thing, my old sewing machine went to the great sewing machine playground in the sky 2 years ago after 15 years of loyal service.

The manual says to insert the needle with the flat side facing the back of the machine (check) and to thread the needle from the back (check). It seems like threading from the back is causing a lot of the tangling problems.

There could be several things that could cause the machine not to pick up the bobbin thread. The upper thread could be tangled. Remove the thread completely from the machine. The correct size spool cap should be used for the size of the thread spool. Re-thread the machine according to the directions in the manual.
