      • Quite a while after that while working out of town I lent it to a buddy for a month he called me shortly after picking it up stating the brakes felt really soft. It was still covered under extended warranty so I told him to bring it in. They told him the same thing, no abnormalities. All this occurred on stock tires with good pads.
      • Anyway, during the work everything was normal I pushed the calipers pistons back removed the caliper and installed the new pads. and rotors. I then jumped in the car and to set the pads against the disc but from that moment on the pedal has been spongy and responds a little to pumping.
      • I got in my car; started the engine, and put my foot on the brake pedal so I could shift out of "PARK" - the pedal was extremely soft, and went almost completely to the floor (it felt like a brake pedal feels after you've replaced your front disc brake pads, and you push the pedal down once or twice to "seat" the pads, because you had to push ...
      • RE: Frustrating Brake Problem IP: Logged Message: I have a 97 CC, 3.9L, 2 wheel ABS, 95K miles. I know this is an old post but I'm hoping someone found a fix. I replaced my pads rotors and hubs, and all of a sudden I am having problems. Bled the brakes twice then took it to pepboys, they said master cylinder was bad.
      • 5. Replacement Brake Pads are Regulated by the Government. False. There are no government regulations concerning brake pad performance. 6. Brake Pads Need to Warm Up. False. Street brake pads produce torque at even very low temperatures, even the exotic carbon ceramic brake systems. The exception is brakes used on high-performance racing vehicles.

    • Feb 01, 2011 · A final note about Metro calipers - there are two types - early and late (revised to reduce the problem of stuck pistons). Either is acceptable but they use different brake pads. If possible, make a note of the year of Metro the calipers are sourced from, to help when ordering new pads. Vented/4-Pot brakes and 10 inch wheels
      • Brake systems must be bled according to manufacturers’ instructions. The method used is matched to the type of brake system. Brakes are bled by one of two methods: top down, gravity bleeding or bottom up pressure bleeding. Brakes are bled when the pedals feel spongy or whenever the brake system has been opened.
    • A simple pad replacement would not be a long-term solution. Have your brakes checked by a Certified Safety Expert to confirm the requirement for repair. The aforementioned high demand brake use can easily cause more damage to more components in the brake system than just the brake pads. Brake noise can also occur if the brake system has a "weak ...
      • Jul 25, 2013 · You already drove it. So you would know if you needed to bleed the brakes. Air in the system would cause the brake light to come on, and you would have at least a spongy pedal and at worst a pedal which went right to the floor. If you did not open the lines, you are fine. Replacing pads (or pads and rotors) should not typically require bleeding.
    • Normally, a new brake pad is 12-mm thick so if you find your pads approximately 3 mm, which is 25% of the usual thickness, don't slack off and have a replacement. Replacing your brake pads In changing your brake pads, be sure to fill your brake fluid all the way to the full mark.
      • Brake Pads: The factory brake pads can often be noisy, as they have a tendency to squeal when applied after they have several thousand miles on it. They also produce a lot of brake dust especially on the front of the car since the front brakes work harder than the rear.
      • Jun 27, 2019 · Added another poll choice after driving the truck another couple weeks. Right now, the brakes are pretty much like they were. Very inconsistent. They might get a better bite after bedding but I am convinced the inconsistency is just a system design. I will sometimes feel a drop in the pedal that seems system induced. Very deliberate.
      • If both pads and discs are new then do 20 to 30 hard stops to de bur the discs, let them cool by just driving then start breaking from high speed repeatedly untill you get brake fade. Do not stop...
      • Apr 27, 2020 · The pedal wasn't spongy, but when the brakes engaged, the pedal was like an inch from the floor to start. Tried bleeding as per FSM and broke a rear bleeder fitting off so figured it wouldn't hurt to replace rear wheel cylinders.
    • soft brake pedal mystery. Dec 10 2017, 4:52am. Hi all, truck's pretty new to me, and I knew it needed rear pads/rotors when I bought it, so I put them on, but had a serious battle getting the T55 caliper guide pins out, so I bought new calipers (I think the were original calipers with 179k, so...no big loss). ...
    • Jan 03, 2012 · Replace the caliper hardware and lubricate everything per spec. Bleed and flush the brake fluid. Burnish the pads for proper break in. The result will be new brakes that will last as long as the original brakes did. Problem: I have a late model vehicle with antilock brakes.
      • Indeed, each time the vehicle brakes, the friction generated causes the material used in both the brake pads and the brake discs to become worn. To avoid compromising the working order of the braking system, when a certain level of wear has been reached, the brake discs and brake pads must be replaced.

    • Long brake pedal travel after pad change - Dynamic Dave : I had this same problem on an Astra after a front pad change. Somehow air had got into the brake system on pushing the brake pistons back to accomodate the new pads. In my case, the system needed bleeding and everything was fine thereafter.

If the noise is still present, go to step 3. If the noise is still present, replace the brake actuator assembly. •Air in the system makes them feel soft and spongy. Replace the fluid if you must, but my bet is on an air bubble or two. it doesn't take much!

    • The brake pedal acts as if there is air in the line or the need to be bled. The brake pads are fairly new changed this year. The next stop starts the same then the pedal goes to the floor. •A metallic squeak when you brake could mean the brake pads are worn out and the metal backing is scraping on the disc. This can score the discs and seriously affect brake performance. It’s most likely because the brakes weren’t serviced but it could be a sticking piston in a caliper pushing the pad against the disc. •After fighting this problem for a week and four quarts of brake fluid I took the calipers lose from the car and pointed the bleed port up. With the rotor installed and a bleeder tube running back to the reservoir I pumped the brake pedal about 50 times for each caliper. I never noticed any extra air bubbles but the brakes work great now.

The following steps are also important to reduce the vibration that causes brake noise. • Inspect and replace worn brake hardware and guide pins • Be certain to use the proper lubricants. Properly clean and lubricate caliper mountings. Finally, check for proper wheel bearing adjustment and wheel nut torque.

    • Hey guys- Changed pads and rotors upfront and brakes were spongy as hell, had to go almost to the floor to stop. Didn't crack the fluid system when I did the brake job. Decided to go ahead and bleed all 4 corners starting with furthest. Fluid was nasty and old so I did an entire system flush, but the I am still getting squishy brakes.•If your brakes are not improving after 30 heavy heat cycles, something else is wrong and it is time to consider having an air bleed service of the system and/or new brake pads and rotors. Likewise, some loud squeals do not disappear regardless of use or intensity.

The brakes were a little spongy since we bought the car. While replacing a front bearing I installed new pads from Autozone (Duralast #DG721) Suddenly the brakes were very spongy, the peddle traveled almost to the floor but did stop the car. I did not open the brake lines. Following everything I could find on the internet I:

May 23, 2017 · That's why a soft, spongy-feeling brake pedal that doesn't resist pressure and goes straight to the floor is a common sign that something's gone wrong in your brake system. Inside your brake lines is a liquid called brake fluid, which transfers the force of you hitting the brake pedal to the brake rotors and pads to immobilise your car.

Nov 29, 2020 · At 120,000 miles I had the brakes redone, all 4 corners, new pads and turned down the rotors. Afterward I expected the brakes to be "like new" (ha!) - the brake pedal was soft, mushy and pulsed. Took it back had them drain, refill with fresh, and bleed. Still soft, mushy and pulsing. Took it back.

I have a simple Shimano hydraulic disc brake system (don't know the model). Over time, the feel of brakes is getting soft, I have tried to adjust by tightening the screw (on the joining of brake line). I have also recently changed the brakes pads myself. Is softness due to a decrease in fluid level?

Contamination–There can be contamination on the brake pads from oil, water, grease and other materials that stop the pads from solidly connecting to the rotor. Solution: In many cases, this contamination can be permanent, so it is advisable to replace the pads.

Please also keep in mind that all brand new brakes at the wheels will always be initially “soft” until the pads fully bed in to the rotors and all of the new machinery gets truly run in. This applies to most any car, rolling off the assembly line brand new or recently having the brakes relined / serviced.

Jul 08, 2015 · Step 2 – Bleed brakes. The overwhelming reason for a soft brake pedal is a system that needs to be bled. Even if you just installed a complete new brake system with pads, shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, and bled it pretty well that may not be enough. Manually bleed the brakes.

Just put on new shocks, strut bar bushings, swaybar links (more on this later), drums, shoes, rotors, front wheel bearings, and pads and now my brake pedal is way soft. Did not open the system at all but it still developed a problem. Bled the brakes RR, LR, RF, LF twice and the pedal travel did not change.

Sep 23, 2008 · no brake system pressure after bleeding I'd first like to thank Lyle for coming in from Connecticut and helping me out. After completing installation of a new front pass side hard brake line, and front hoses, rear calipers and rotors, and bleeding the system 3 times with a Mity Vac, still no pressure, pedal drops to the floor.

To avoid this problem remove your brake pads, fully push back the pistons and insert a bleed block between the pistons to keep them there. This will ensure that the correct amount of brake fluid is left in the brake system during and after the bleed process. If you suspect that your brake is over filled you will need to remove the excess brake fluid. Always vent out excess brake fluid from the highest point in the brake system - the lever.

Sep 25, 2013 · 1) Bleed brakes / check brake fluid for funk/air bubbles, etc. 2) Check out master cylinder 3) Possible ABS issue....will probably take to garage for that one. Possibly take car to Autozone so they...

Place lubricant (to prevent squealing) to the back side of the brake pad, then reinstall the shim and the new pad. Using a C-clamp, re-attach the caliper and tighten the clamp by hand. Put the mounting bolts back into the caliper and tighten with a torque wrench until you're applying about 16 to 20 pounds of pressure.

Is it spongy? If so, give your brakes a bleed; "sticky" piston or pistons: symptoms are similar to air in the system (but without the spongy lever feel). The brake piston seals are designed so they deform slightly when the brakes are applied. When you let off the brakes, they untwist and help to retract the pistons for drag-free running.

They will be a little spongy at first, at least until the new pads seat in. Plus you will have a slight amount of air trapped, but with use, will usually work it’s way back out of the master cylinder. I have never used a scan tool to bleed ABS brakes, but that is the recommended way of doing it.

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd that I've owned since new. A couple of weeks ago I started getting a soft brake pedal, followed shortly by the "ABS" and "Brake" lights coming on. It felt just like a line had let go, soft pedal, weak brakes. So this week I got underneath and checked it out. If you choose to use a sticky brake caliper you will experience excessive brake pad to brake rotor temperatures due to the caliper not allowing the brake pads to fully disengage the brake rotor. This will result in poor brake system performance leading to glazed brake rotors, glazed brake pads, brake noises, and warped brake rotors

Pads may have softened up a bit, I know my stock pads had a vicious inital bite at low speeds then got better with miles. But that doesn't explain a soft pedal. You either are losing fluid or have air in the lines. If you're a novice take it in and have the dealer check it out and maybe ask them to bleed the brakes. Spongy brakes are when the pedal has a mushy feel to it that seems to go away after pressing it multiple times at once but comes back after laying off the pedal. This is a big problem when getting the vehicle to stop. Spongy brakes are a result of air getting into the brake system, which can happen from leaks in the ...
